  • [tennis] Monday was a day of drama as Andy Murray was left baffled and concerned by debilitating cramp that came close to ending his US Open campaign at the first hurdle. British women's No 2 Johanna Konta lost her first-round match 6-2 6-3 to Shahar Peer while it was also the end of the road for Irish qualifier James McGee. Heather Watson begins her campaign next and she's due on court any minute ...
    8/26/2014 2:59:48 PM
  • [sunny] It's sunny and very hot at Flushing Meadows in New York again as Heather Watson receives serve from Sorana Cirstea on Court 13.
    8/26/2014 3:10:46 PM
  • WATSON *0-1 CIRSTEA: Watson is ranked 46 in the world, while her opponent is down at  No 80 after suffering 12 first-round losses this season. The Romanian opens up with a hold to 15.
    8/26/2014 3:12:21 PM
  • WATSON 1-1* CIRSTEA: Watson announced herself as a potential star by winning the US Open junior title in 2009, but has not won a match at Flushing Meadows since. She opens with with a commanding love service game, taking the ball early on this surface.

    8/26/2014 3:15:55 PM
  • WATSON *1-2 CIRSTEA: Cirstea has slipped from a high of 21 in the rankings to 81, while Watson has won all their previous matches, so she heads into this one confident of keeping up that winning record. However, the Romanian is looking sharp on serve and a couple of aces hands her the game.

    8/26/2014 3:17:29 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-3* CIRSTEA: Court 13 is pretty full for this clash with quite a bit of British support for the girl from Guernsey. A couple of errors hands Cirstea a chance to break and Watson double faults at a crucial time. She'll be massively disappointed with that service game!
    8/26/2014 3:22:32 PM
  • WATSON *1-4 CIRSTEA: The pin-up girl from Bucharest Sorana Cirstea is serving superbly at the moment and Watson has no answer to the firepower of the 24-year-old. Another comfortable hold!
    8/26/2014 3:25:35 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-5* CIRSTEA: British Fed Cup captain Judy Murray is in the stands to watch Watson in action which will encourage the Brit. She is currently being taken to the cleaners by Cirstea, although she lands a delicious whipped double-handed crosscourt backhand for a winner at 15-15. Watson saves two break-point chances, but can't save a third as the Romanian closes in on the opening set.
    8/26/2014 3:34:23 PM
  • Watson has never beaten a top-10 opponent, but has secured her first two wins over top-20 players in the last two months, beating Flavia Pennetta at Eastbourne and Dominika Cibulkova in Montreal. She'll need to show that kind of form if she is to reach the second round here in New York as Sorana Cirstea serves for the first set.
    8/26/2014 3:35:24 PM
  • [set] WATSON 1-6 *0-0 CIRSTEA: A fifth ace of the match hands Sorana Cirstea the first set, which she completely dominated.
    8/26/2014 3:37:00 PM
  • Formerly a defensive player, Watson has revolutionised her game under Argentinian coach Diego Veronelli and is confident she can comfortably surpass the career-high ranking of 39 she set last year. She is only six places adrift of that and has very few ranking points to defend having failed to win a tour-level match over the closing months of last season.

    8/26/2014 3:40:01 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-6 0-1* CIRSTEA: Watson, ranked 46, is feeling the pressure and is over-hitting her groundstrokes from the back of the court. She nets her backhand for an early break in the second set.
    8/26/2014 3:41:44 PM
  • [stats] Cirstea won 55% of her first serves and hit 14 winners. Meanwhile, Watson made eight unforced errors and three double faults during that opening set.
    8/26/2014 3:43:22 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-6 *1-1 CIRSTEA: At 30-30, the net cord goes the way of Watson, who earns her first break point of the match. And she takes it after forcing Cirstea into an error on her backhand side. Game on!
    8/26/2014 3:46:06 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-6 1-2* CIRSTEA: Watson double faults for the fourth time in the match before thundering her return high and wide. She the nets her backhand to gift the Romanian a triple break point. Another costly double hands Cirstea the break. Oh dear!
    8/26/2014 3:49:30 PM
  • WATSON 1-6 *1-3 CIRSTEA: Last year Watson arrived in New York low on confidence and still struggling to regain health and fitness after a bout of glandular fever. She lost to Daniela Hantuchova in the first major of the year in Australia, Simona Halep at the French Open and Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon - some big name players. The 22-year-old seems to be suffering with confidence on Court 13 as the Romanian holds to 15 to move clear now.
    8/26/2014 3:53:33 PM
  • [break] WATSON 1-6 1-4* CIRSTEA: Watson recovers from a sixth double fault of the match to move 40-30 ahead on serve, but a wild forehand lands long. The British No 1 is broken again after netting a straightforward backhand. It'll take something special from Watson if she is to win this now!
    8/26/2014 3:59:23 PM
  • WATSON 1-6 *1-5 CIRSTEA: Comfortable hold to 15 for the Romanian express train that is Sorana Cirstea on Court 13. She's just one game away from a place in the second-round.
    8/26/2014 4:02:41 PM
  • WATSON 1-6 1-6 CIRSTEAWatson double faults twice to hand Sorana Cirstea a double match point. And the Romanian wins it in just 54 minutes with a scorching winner.
    8/26/2014 4:05:34 PM

  • DISAPPOINTMENT FOR WATSON
Heather Watson suffered a fourth successive first-round exit in New York and after her match she told Sky Sports 3 ...

Sorana played very well from the beginning and all the way through and I just wasn't unable to find my game because she didn't give me much time. It's another week, so I'll just look forward to the doubles."

    8/26/2014 4:19:52 PM
  • [stats] Watson's statistics made miserable reading, with eight double faults, six winners and 23 unforced errors adding up to a very bad day at the office. The 22-year-old still has not won a match at Flushing Meadows since winning the junior title in 2009.
