  • [everton] Everton boss Roberto Martinez was delighted with his side's 4-0 win at Stevenage yesterday, saying he was glad to avoid an upset against lower-league opposition:
It was a professional performance which was pleasing because even when you have a team with the talent we have, today was still going to be a real test.

  • [sundaysupplement] The Sunday Supplement is about to get underway on Sky Sports 1. Joining host Neil Ashton in the studio will be Martin Samuel of the Daily Mail, Paul Hayward from the Daily Telegraph and The Independent's Sam Wallace to discuss all of the big talking points and we'll be bringing you the best lines.
    1/26/2014 10:00:19 AM
  • [sunderland] Former Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio has slammed current Black Cats stars Lee Cattermole and Phil Bardsley, as well as branding John O'Shea "two-faced":
These two players (Cattermole and Bardsley) were rotten - the most unprofessional players I've ever worked with. What Bardsley has done in the last year speaks volumes. Photos of him lying on the floor in a casino covered by £50 notes and laughing at the team losing on the opening day, that's public.

  • [sundaysupplement] Carrying on the topic of Paolo Di Canio's controversial outburst, Paul Hayward thinks he will need to change if he is to manage in the Premier League again:
It's more gibberish of the type which cost him the job in the first place. He tried this dictatorship approach and the players didn't like it. The players were a credit to Poyet on Wednesday night and they clearly want to play for him, but under Di Canio, it was chaos.

    1/26/2014 11:06:38 AM
  • [westbrom] Kick It Out chairman Lord Ouseley has criticised West Brom over their handling of Nicolas Anelka's alleged anti-Semitic gesture:
West Brom should have taken much more responsibility in recognising that the action was offensive to Jewish people and also offensive to anyone who is against discrimination in football. If West Brom had behaved in an honourable manner, then clearly we would be in a better place. They haven't been strong on this. If your player misbehaves, you have an obligation to take action, regardless of what the FA does.

    1/26/2014 11:13:04 AM
  • [sundaysupplement] Liverpool host Everton in Tuesday night's Merseyside derby and Sam Wallace thinks that both clubs have bright futures under their respective managers:
I think the good thing about both teams' managers is the basic principles of how their teams play. You'd recognise a Martinez team and you'd recognize a Rodgers team. They look like teams that have got a philosophy behind them.

  • [sundaysupplement] Speaking of the potential signing of Julian Draxler, Martin Samuel believes that it could give Arsenal an added edge:
It's about investment and potential return. For Arsenal to win the title and compete in the Champions League, the financial rewards would be huge.

  • [goalsonsunday] Gianluca Vialli reflects on Sunderland's penalty shoot-out win over Manchester United on Wednesday night:
I was really surprised to see to Jones and Rafael taking the last penalties- you want the good ones first and the great ones last. I watched the match and it was an incredible last two minutes. This is why we love English football.

    1/26/2014 11:46:18 AM
  • [goalsonsunday] Vialli also says that he always thought Gus Poyet would go on to be a good manager after their days together at Chelsea:
You can tell when a footballer is a thinker, he's thinking about football, about tactics 24/7. I never had any problems with Gus and he knows the importance of a good relationship between the manager and his players.

    1/26/2014 11:48:14 AM
  • GOAL! HIBERNIAN 0-1 CELTIC (Commons 8) [goal]
Kris Commons puts Celtic ahead with less than 10 minutes on the clock, pouncing on a defensive gaffe, cushioning the ball on his chest and slotting into the corner.
    1/26/2014 12:56:29 PM
  • A cool finish from Kris Commons and the early lead is Celtic's.

    1/26/2014 12:57:48 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [kick-off]
We've had the handshakes, the huddles and now the hosts' rendition of the Greasy Chip Butty Song. Let's get down to business.

    1/26/2014 1:00:16 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [competition]
Fulham are knocking the ball around in the opening stages but they might want to be careful - the pitch is treacly to say the least. Jamie Murphy, who's got the better of Passley here down the left, wins a free-kick in a decent position on the edge of the box. Rodallega clears.
    1/26/2014 1:03:21 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [save]
David, slipped through by Tankovic's clever back-heel, tries to prod across goal but Long is alert and spreads himself well to narrow the angle. Fulham keep the ball alive as David clambers back over the advertising boards but Rodallega heads narrowly over.
    1/26/2014 1:06:49 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [injury]
It was a home corner that came to nothing but in conceding it, John Arne Riise looks like he's tweaked his hamstring here. Yep, off comes the Norwegian, to be replaced by Plumain. They'll surely look to target those young full-backs, will the Blades.
    1/26/2014 1:09:54 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [fulham]
Neither goalkeeper's really been worked yet and that long-ranger won't get George Long's heart rate going. Dragged his foot across the ball, did Tankovic.
    1/26/2014 1:13:25 PM
  • HIBERNIAN 0-1 CELTIC [scottishfootball]
Celtic still lead at Easter Road but Samaras should double their advantage, dropping a shoulder to craft a yard, only to shoot idly at the keeper. Almost half-an-hour gone there.
    1/26/2014 1:14:50 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [flag]
This is neat interplay from Fulham, Kasami and Tankovic combining well, but Plumain's drifted offside. Still fairly even stuff so far.
    1/26/2014 1:16:54 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [rain]
It's a right old bog in this corner of the pitch; Murphy twisting in vain as two purple shirts close in and eventually clear. Jose Baxter's standing over a dead ball on the edge of the area, Hughes penalised for a lunge at Porter, but there's too much bend on it.
    1/26/2014 1:21:39 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [rain]
David Stockdale's just conceded a corner after smothering a Chris Porter flick-on, only slide helplessly across the byline. The weather folk had expected the rain to ease off an hour ago but it's still coming down pretty heavily...
    1/26/2014 1:26:45 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 0-0 FULHAM [fulham]
Rene Meulensteen is chuckling but Neill Collins didn't see the funny side; a ball across the six-yard box sticks in the mud and the stopper's taken by surprise, finally able to hoik into the stands.
    1/26/2014 1:30:17 PM
  • GOAL! SHEFF UTD 1-0 FULHAM (Porter 31) [goal]
What about this! Big centre-back Harry Maguire surges forward and it's super movement from Chris Porter, who darts across Senderos and flicks beyond Stockdale.
    1/26/2014 1:31:19 PM
  • HIBERNIAN 0-1 CELTIC[half-time]
Kris Commons's 15th league goal of the season has the Hoops ahead at the break in Easter Road.
    1/26/2014 1:35:51 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 1-0 FULHAM [fulham]
Ooh, Fulham want a penalty here and they could well have had one, Long swiftly off his line but appearing to catch Rodallega. Nope, says Andre Marriner, after a lingering look. Big call. In weather news, the sun is out!
    1/26/2014 1:37:13 PM
  • COMMONS CLASS
Scotland winger has put Celtic ahead at the break in Leith.

    1/26/2014 1:38:53 PM
  • SHEFF UTD 1-0 FULHAM
The hosts content to let Fulham play keep-ball at the moment, ensuring those two blocks of four stay intact. Couple of minutes left in the first half at Bramall Lane... here's Karagounis over a set-piece; urgh, that's horrible.
