Weekend Live! (May 2-4)

  • [arsenal] Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reassured fans that England duo Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere are not far away from returning for the club from injury. Gibbs has been sidelined with an ankle problem while Wilshere has been out for almost two months after a foot injury sustained during England's friendly against Denmark.
Kieran Gibbs is very very close now (to returning from injury) and Jack Wilshere is not far away as well. They are both very close to being integrated back into training again.

  • [fl72) Leicester and Burnley have taken the top two spots in the Sky Bet Championship - but the race for the final play-off place is wide open and we've got two key games live this weekend. Nottingham Forest v Brighton is on Sky Sports 2HD and Reading v Burnley is on Sky Sports 1HD, with both games kicking off at 12.15pm. We'll have some team news for those games shortly.
    5/2/2014 10:59:24 AM
  • [brighton] Brighton duo Matt Upson and Dale Stephens are doubts with ankle injuries ahead of the crunch clash at Nottingham ForestDefender Upson, who was this week named Albion's player of the year, missed last Friday's 2-0 win over Yeovil while midfielder Stephens limped off in the second half. Striker Will Hoskins is available after a long-term knee problem but midfielder Andrew Crofts is recovering from a cruciate injury. The Seagulls need a victory at the City Ground and Reading to drop points against Burnley to snatch the final play-off spot.
    5/2/2014 11:01:08 AM
  • [nottinghamforest] Greg Halford will miss Nottingham Forest's final game of the Sky Bet Championship campaign against play-off hopefuls BrightonHalford has been handed a three-match suspension having been retrospectively punished by the Football Association for an incident during the defeat at Bournemouth last weekend. With Jamaal Lascelles fighting a knee injury, Halford's absence could leave Danny Collins as the only available recognised centre-half on Saturday. Goalkeeper Karl Darlow and forward Jamie Paterson remain doubts. Darlow has been on the sidelines for the last two games with a shoulder injury while Paterson missed the Bournemouth game. Forest's play-off hopes ended with defeat against the Cherries but Brighton can oust Reading from the top-six if they better the Royals' result against Burnley.
    5/2/2014 11:04:44 AM
  • [reading] Hal Robson-Kanu should be back in the Reading squad for the final-day play-off decider against Burnley. The winger missed last weekend's 3-1 win at Doncaster after suffering a nasty facial injury against Middlesbrough four days earlier, but he is set to return wearing a protective mask. However, the Royals still have injury problems with midfielders Danny Guthrie (calf), Danny Williams and Jem Karacan (both knee) all on the sidelines. Nigel Adkins' side need to match or better Brighton's result at Nottingham Forest to secure their place in the play-offs.
    5/2/2014 11:08:50 AM
  • [burnley] Burnley remain without just Sam Vokes and Luke O'Neill as they bring their glorious season to an end at Reading. Wales international striker Vokes had a routine check-up on Wednesday and received good news on his knee ligament injury - although he is still in the early stages of his rehabilitation - while full-back O'Neill is missing with a thigh strain. Boss Sean Dyche named an unchanged XI against Ipswich, despite seeing the Clarets book their automatic promotion spot earlier in the week, and could name a strong team once more as they bid to finish on a high. Michael Kightly is due to play the final game of his loan spell from Stoke, although the winger has expressed a desire to move to Turf Moor permanently this summer, while captain Jason Shackell will hope to end the campaign having played every minute of every league game.

  • [barcelona] Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has promised his players will fight to the end in the pursuit of the Primera Liga title. They go into Saturday's match against Getafe (live on Sky Sports 3HD, 3pm) four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid - who they face on the final day of the season - with three matches remaining. The odds are against them but one slip from Atletico would put Barca back in the driving seat with that final day clash to come at the Nou Camp.
These players have never tired of competing and winning. When there are serious difficulties and situations, they still compete.

  • UPS AND DOWNS - Premier League.
    • Arsenal will be assured of fourth place and Champions League football by beating West Brom on Sunday or by matching Everton's result against Manchester City.
    • Cardiff will be relegated if they fail to beat Newcastle and both Norwich (v Chelsea) and Sunderland (v Manchester United) win. Fulham will also go down if they lose at Stoke and Norwich and Sunderland pick up maximum points.
    • Victories for Cardiff and Fulham would see them climb out of the bottom three if Norwich and Sunderland lose. [football]
    5/2/2014 12:10:19 PM
  • UPS AND DOWNS - Sky Bet Championship.

    • Leicester are champions and Burnley are promoted.
    • Derby, QPR and Wigan are in the play-offs and will be joined by Reading if they beat Burnley on the last day of the season. Defeat or a draw for the Royals would allow Brighton to move above them if the Seagulls win, while a defeat for Reading could also open the door for Blackburn to climb above them, although they would need to win with a goal difference swing of seven in their favour.
    • Yeovil and Barnsley are relegated.
    • Birmingham will go down with a defeat at Bolton. A draw coupled with a loss for Doncaster at Leicester would see the Blues avoid the drop on goal difference. Millwall and Blackpool are not mathematically safe either. [fl72]
    5/2/2014 12:14:03 PM
  • UPS AND DOWNS - Sky Bet League 1.
    • Wolves are champions and Brentford are promoted.
    • Preston, Leyton Orient, Rotherham and Peterborough are in the play-offs.
    • Stevenage and Shrewsbury are relegated.
    • Carlisle must win to stay up but are also relying on Crewe to lose with a goal difference swing of four required. Tranmere need a victory and must hope Crewe do not win.
    • Notts County can also go down if they lose and both Tranmere and Crewe pick up three points. Colchester are not mathematically safe but it would require an astonishing set of results to drag them into trouble. [fl72]
    5/2/2014 12:19:02 PM
  • UPS AND DOWNS - Sky Bet League 2.
    • Rochdale, Scunthorpe and Chesterfield have achieved promotion with all three in the running to win the title.
    • Fleetwood, Burton, York and Southend are in the play-offs.
    • Torquay are relegated. Wycombe are three points behind third-bottom Northampton and Bristol Rovers in 21st and need to win - and for the Cobblers and/or Rovers to lose - if they are to survive on goal difference. [fl72]
    5/2/2014 12:21:56 PM
  • [chelsea] Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are available again as Chelsea return to Premier League duty in Super Sunday's clash with Norwich, which is live on Sky Sports 1HD (4pm). The quartet missed the Champions League semi-final exit to Atletico Madrid - Lampard and Mikel were suspended, Matic and Salah ineligible - while Ramires serves the second of his four-match ban. Captain John Terry (ankle), Eden Hazard (calf) and Samuel Eto'o (knee) featured against Atletico despite recent injuries, while Oscar (hip) was on the bench, with all four fitness concerns and goalkeeper Petr Cech (shoulder) out.
    5/2/2014 12:29:41 PM
  • [saturdaynightfootball] Playmaker David Silva could return for title favourites Manchester City's crucial Premier League trip to Everton (Saturday, 5.30pm, SS1HD). The Spaniard missed last weekend's win at Crystal Palace after being carried off on a stretcher with an ankle injury in the previous game against West Brom but has now recovered. Winger Jesus Navas has missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Matija Nastasic is back in full training after three months out with a knee injury but is not match-fit.
    5/2/2014 12:35:03 PM
  • [hull] Hull City manager Steve Bruce has admitted he would be satisfied with a dour goalless draw at fellow strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday.
A dull 0-0 will do me on Saturday. Last time against Villa was an awful affair. Me and (Villa boss) Paul Lambert both said it was arguably the worst game we'd seen in a long time. This one must be better because it couldn't be much worse.

  • [football] It is possible that the lead in the Premier League title race could change hands three times on the penultimate weekend, while eight sides continue to contest a relegation battle that looks set to go down to the wire. Read our preview of all the action coming up here.

    5/2/2014 12:44:12 PM
  • [tottenham] Andros Townsend is out for Tottenham v West Ham (Saturday, 12.45pm) after suffering an ankle injury against Stoke which means that he will miss the World CupKyle Walker (pelvis) also remains sidelined, along with fellow long-term absentee Erik Lamela (back), who has not played in 2014. Mousa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen and Etienne Capoue will be assessed ahead of kick-off following recent lay-offs, while Sandro will also hope to feature after returning to the substitutes' bench last week.

    5/2/2014 1:01:05 PM
  • [sunderland] Sunderland boss Gus Poyet could name an unchanged side v Manchester United following their successful run in recent weeks. Italian international Emanuele Giaccherini will be pushing for a starting role, though, after impressing when he came on against Cardiff last week - scoring one goal and setting up another. One man not involved is on-loan midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, who has tendonitis of the knee.
    5/2/2014 1:04:45 PM
  • [stoke] Ryan Shawcross will be absent for Stoke against Fulham as he serves his one-game suspension after being shown a second yellow card in last weekend's defeat to Tottenham. The Potters will also be without Matthew Etherington (back) and Robert Huth (knee) who both remain sidelined. On-loan winger Oussama Assaidi is pushing for a return to the starting line-up after recovering from a knee injury to come off the bench in the previous two outings.
    5/2/2014 1:08:05 PM
  • [southampton] Maya Yoshida and Jay Rodriguez (both knee) remain long-term absentees and will not figure again this season. Gaston Ramirez is hoping to shake off an ankle injury in time to feature against Swansea on Saturday, while Mauricio Pochettino could give further chances to youngsters like Sam Gallagher and Harrison Reed.
    5/2/2014 1:11:52 PM
  • [supersunday] West Brom centre-back Gareth McAuley is expected to return for Sunday's trip to Arsenal (1.30pm, SS1HD) after recovering from a calf problem which has kept him out for the past couple of games. Fellow defender Liam Ridgewell is still out with a knee injury, while Steven Reid and Zoltan Gera are also sidelined.
    5/2/2014 1:16:28 PM
  • [norwich] Norwich boss Neil Adams could look to change things around for the trip to West London to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (Sunday, 4pm, SS1HD). The misfiring Ricky van Wolfswinkel started at Manchester United, but Gary Hooper could be handed a recall. Nigerian defender Joseph Yobo is fit again after a recent calf injury and could also push for starting place.
